FSH Online, Semarang, Indonesia<\/strong> \u2014 Halal should no longer be understood merely as a legal status or certification attached to a product. In a rapidly changing global economy, halal must evolve into a broader ethical framework that embraces quality, responsibility, social justice, and environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n

This message was highlighted by the Rector of UIN Walisongo Semarang, Prof. Dr. H. Musahadi, M.Ag., as he officially opened the 2nd International Conference on Sharia Economic Law (ICOSHEL 2nd) in Semarang.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Held from 8\u201310 September 2026 at Pandanaran Hotel, the international conference carries the theme \u201cSharia Economic Law, Global Halal Industry, and Environmental Sustainability: Toward Substantive Compliance for a Green Economy.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The conference brings together scholars, university leaders, government representatives, and experts to explore the intersection between Sharia economic law, the global halal industry, and one of the most pressing challenges of the contemporary world: environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In his opening remarks, Prof. Musahadi underlined the fundamental position of halal in Islamic teaching. He emphasized that halal should be approached not only through the question of what is legally permissible, but also through the values and objectives that Islamic law seeks to achieve.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In this context, the principle of halal is closely connected to tayyib\u2014that which is good, wholesome, safe, and beneficial.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This broader perspective is increasingly relevant as the halal industry develops into a complex global ecosystem involving production, international trade, food systems, logistics, consumer protection, and global supply chains.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cHalal should not stop at a label or formal recognition of a product. It should represent goodness, responsibility, safety, and benefit. Therefore, discussions on halal must also address how economic activities affect people, society, and the environment,\u201d Prof. Musahadi said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

From Formal to Substantive Compliance<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

One of the central ideas promoted at ICOSHEL 2nd is the transition from formal compliance to substantive compliance.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Formal compliance remains essential for ensuring that products and economic activities conform to applicable Sharia and regulatory standards. However, Prof. Musahadi stressed that contemporary Islamic economic thought needs to go further.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Substantive compliance asks a deeper question: beyond fulfilling legal requirements, does an economic activity genuinely reflect the ethical objectives of Sharia?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This includes whether production protects consumers, whether business practices promote fairness, whether natural resources are used responsibly, and whether economic growth creates benefit without generating disproportionate social or environmental harm.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Such an approach positions Sharia economic law within a broader international discourse on ethical and sustainable economic development.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The global expansion of the halal industry has also made this perspective increasingly important. A product may involve raw materials originating in one country, manufacturing in another, logistics across several jurisdictions, and consumers in multiple regions.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As a result, halal governance can no longer focus exclusively on the final product. It increasingly intersects with traceability, supply-chain integrity, food safety, responsible sourcing, animal welfare, and environmental responsibility.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Halal and the Green Economy<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Prof. Musahadi also drew attention to the relationship between Islamic principles and the emerging global agenda of a green economy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Islamic teachings place strong emphasis on balance, human responsibility toward creation, and the prevention of harm. Economic development, therefore, should not be pursued at the expense of ecological sustainability.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For universities and scholars of Sharia economic law, this creates a significant intellectual agenda.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The challenge is to explore how classical principles and contemporary Islamic legal scholarship can contribute to modern debates on sustainable production, responsible consumption, environmental governance, and intergenerational justice.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Economic progress, Prof. Musahadi noted, should ultimately improve human welfare without compromising the ability of future generations to enjoy a healthy and sustainable environment.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This intersection between halal and sustainability is at the heart of ICOSHEL 2nd.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The conference features Khalid Dadda of Miftah Al-Khair Association, Morocco; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hj. Betania Kartika Muflih, B.A., M.A., from the International Institute for Halal Research and Training (INHART); and Dr. drh. Agung Suganda, M.Si., Director-General of Livestock and Animal Health at the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The academic session is moderated by Dr. Firqah Annajiyah Mansyuroh, M.H., lecturer in the Sharia Economic Law programme at UIN Antasari Banjarmasin.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Dean of the Faculty of Sharia and Law UIN Walisongo Dr. H. Tolkah, M.A. and Chair of POSDHESI Dr. H. Abdul Mujib, M.Ag. also delivered remarks at the conference, which was attended by Deans of Sharia faculties and Heads of Sharia Economic Law programmes from across Indonesia.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Bringing Islamic Legal Scholarship into Global Debate<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The organization of ICOSHEL 2nd reflects UIN Walisongo\u2019s effort to strengthen the international relevance of Islamic legal scholarship.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Through the Faculty of Sharia and Law, the university seeks to create an academic ecosystem in which Sharia is not studied in isolation from contemporary global transformations. Instead, Islamic legal scholarship is brought into dialogue with industry, public policy, environmental studies, food governance, and sustainable development.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For the Faculty of Sharia and Law, this also represents an important direction for the future of Sharia Economic Law education: preparing scholars and graduates who understand Islamic legal traditions while remaining capable of addressing new economic and regulatory challenges.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

During the conference, appreciation awards and commemorative gifts were presented to the speakers by the Rector of UIN Walisongo, the Dean of the Faculty of Sharia and Law, and the Chair of POSDHESI.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The message emerging from Semarang is therefore relevant far beyond the conference itself.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The future of halal should not be measured solely by the number of certified products circulating in the global market. Its deeper contribution will be measured by its capacity to promote an economic system that is ethical, trustworthy, socially responsible, and environmentally sustainable.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Through ICOSHEL 2nd, UIN Walisongo and its Faculty of Sharia and Law are bringing this perspective into the international academic conversation\u2014positioning halal not merely as a legal category, but as a potential ethical framework for building a more responsible and sustainable global economy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
